ABS RESIN

What Are ABS Resins?

ABS is a TOUGH AND RIGID PLASTIC MATERIAL with an excellent appearance. The ABS acronym stands for Acrylonitrile (pronounced AK-RUH-LOH-NAHY’-TRIL) Butadiene (pronounced BYOO-TUH-DAHY’-EEN) Styrene. ABS is not an alloy, it is a terpolymer meaning that it is made of more than two monomers that are polymerized together. ABS suffers from poor UV resistance and chemical resistance. It is often painted or chrome plated.

ABS is a thermoplastic resin commonly used for injection molding applications. ABS (Acrylonitrile Butadiene Styrene) generally possesses mechanical properties with medium strength and performance at a medium cost. It is available in multiple grades, colors, and Izod impact ratings.

End-uses of ABS materials include tub/shower surrounds, automotive interior parts, chrome-plated or painted automotive exterior parts, appliance housings, pickup truck caps, boat accessories, automotive trim parts, and computer housings. It is known to be impact-resistant, heat-resistant, and easily machined.

ABS typically has relatively high gloss but low-luster grades are available. There are clear grades on the market as well.

The typical brands of ABS plastic resin offered by Midwest Resins are:

  • Lotte Starex ABS
  • MWR ABS
  • Toray Toyolac ABS
